28 Feb 2017Crossgates reach Fowler Trophy final in marathon semi.

Crossgates Rec faced Main Line Social last night in the first semi-final of the Leeds Team championship.
First up for Crossgates was Bob Patterson against Main Lines' Lee Atkinson. Lee struck first with a well taken 24 break but Bob fought back and was 17 in front with just one red left. Up stepped Lee and a nerveless 25 clearance to the Pink put Main Line 1-0 up.
Next on were Crossgates' Dave French against Dave Barker for Main Line. A nervy frame ensued with both players struggling to find any form. Dave French found himself 14 in front on the brown, and a fantastic long range pot on the brown followed by a simple blue effectively sealed the frame. 1-1
Last on were Mark King for Main Line and Gary Calter for Crossgates in what turned out to be a bizarre topsy turvy frame of snooker. It was anybody's until Gary laid a snooker with a couple of reds remaining. Mark gave away 19 points attempting to hit the reds and it looked like Gary was set for victory as he found himself 26 points in front with his opponent snookered on the last red. Mark managed to hit the red and in getting out of the snooker ended up laying one of his own.Amazingly it took Gary 12 attempts before he was able to hit the red, conceding 44 points in fouls in the process. Mark eventually fluked the Pink to end the hour long frame and Main Line found themselves 2-1 up.
Bob and Lee then played their second frame which again hinged on a snooker laid by Bob on the green. Lee hit it on his 5th attempt but by that stage he was 26 behind, Bob going on to seal the frame and make it 2-2.
The two Dave's then stepped up for their second game and in a one sided affair it was the Crossgates player who prevailed. Dave Barker literally struggled to string two balls together, potting 6 reds without colours in a 42-6 defeat. 3-2 to Crossgates.
Frame 6 and Mark and Gary faced each other for the second time.Mark was in first with a red and black but from there it was one way traffic as Gary completely froze out his opponent with some excellent match snooker, eventually winning 67-10, the frame conceded with reds remaining.
So Crossgates prevailed 4-2 and they now await the winners of tonight's second semi-final between Beeston and Horsforth.

22 Feb 2017**Lines & Bagley overcome resilient effort from Raper & Massey**

The final of the Leeds City Pairs Championship Final between Peter Lines/Jonathan Bagley & Scott Raper/Tony Massey was pre-billed to be a cracker! Indeed it was!

Frame 1: Tony started the match potting a full length red to set the precedent, following up with a further black and red before losing position. Then a loose shot by Scott Raper allowed Jonathan to compile a great 56 break missing a tricky pink to the corner pocket. Peter and Jonathan led by 53pts with 35 left on the table. A long bout of safety eventually led to Peter doubling the last red and ending the 1st frame proceedings. 75 – 21
(1 – 0) (Lines & Bagley)

Frame 2: The start of this frame was a bit scrappy and all players missing early chances, Peter was then in only to break down on 20 losing position from potting a difficult black. Scott couldn’t take advantage despite slamming a long red only then to miscue and jump the white over the blue, more safety followed, then Tony took a great long red on and made a 20 break, could be deemed as unlucky when potting the black the reds opened but found he wasn’t on any! A loose safety from Peter Lines allowed Scott Raper to make 21 but then missed an easy green off the last red. Scott and Tony 19 up with 27 left… A good snooker from Scott led to Jonathan foul/missing three times. The frame ended when Scott potted a long yellow to pink to secure the frame. 41 - 82
(1 – 1)

Frame 3: Jonathan opened the scoring with a cracking red and just when you thought a high break was on the cards, he then missed a black off the spot and the break ending on 23. Tony then had an early chance which he couldn’t take allowing Peter to make the most of the table, making a break of 59 to put an end to that frame. 82 – 0
(2 – 1) (Lines & Bagley)

Frame 4: A very cagey start to this frame, Scott getting in early but breaking down on 15. Over 15 minutes of intricate safety then proceeded, this gave way by a superb shot by Tony to get in, but then broke down on 11. Missed chances for both parings followed by Peter stepping up to make 36 break. Scores were 36 – 28 with 2 reds remaining… The drama started then with a flurry of missed chances, snookers and poor safety shots. Scott potted the final blue and pink, resulting in a tense black ball game. Jonathan played a loose safety and Tony stepped up to pot a fantastic black to keep the match alive. 51 – 59
(2 – 2)

Frame 5: Tense start to this deciding frame as you can imagine with the title of Leeds Pairs Champions beckoning!! Tony once again potted a fantastic long red and then nestling up tight to the brown leaving Peter (not for the first time!) in a bit of trouble. A good escape followed, but Scott could only make 7 from the resulting visit at the table. More tense safety followed, but it was Tony who made the error making way for Peter to get amongst the balls. However this was short lived as he broke down on 19 missing an awkward red with the rest. It was Scott’s turn to then slam a long red in under some sever pressure with the balls open and direct safety. The gods were against him though as it finished tight against green and a risky pink to the middle proved too much of a risk to take on. The frame then moved up a gear and Tony was in the balls making a fantastic 31 break on to break down when trying to move the last red off the cushion.

Tony/Scott led 40 – 28 with last red remaining. A bout of safety led and Tony made an unforced error potting the black with the last red. Peter then potted last red, blue, then yellow but failed to knock green off the cushion. A couple of snookers and foul/misses led to Scott potting a great brown and was faced with a difficult blue with the pink in the open, blue and pink was all that was needed…. Agonisingly, the blue rattled!! Jonathan then plays a fortunate snooker, a second attempt was needed from Tony to hit it, but unfortunately this led to Peter potting the necessary blue and pink to seal the win! 61 – 51
(3 – 2) (Lines & Bagley)

A great night of snooker – Well done to both pairs. Also thanks to Mark King the match referee and a big thank you to Northern Snooker Centre for the use of their excellent facilities.
