11 Jun 2014**SEASON's FINALE - BAGLEY SEES OFF RAPER IN THE LEN LEE**

2014 Leeds Snooker Champion Johnathan Bagley, finished the season off on the front foot, beating Scott Raper 4-0 in the final of the Len Lee Invitation last Thursday at the Northern S.C.

The match report by Andy Taffinder follows-:
Frame 1: The first frame was very tight with a lot of safety shots exchanging between these two top players.
The defining part of the frame came when Johnathan laid a very difficult snooker for Scott to try and hit. He missed it 6 times after the referee had called the miss rule 6 times only to finally hit the red leaving Johnathan to score 16 points and make the frame safe.
1-0 to Johnathan (70 - 26)

Frame 2: Johnathan got in first with a 14 before 'turning up the heat' making a 72 break at his next visit, putting the frame beyond Scott.
2-0 to Johnathan (86 - 9)

Frame 3: Johnathan continued to 'turn on the heat' taking 14 reds with small colours over 4 visits to the table.
3-0 to Johnathan (67 - 5)

Frame 4: Scott scored 1st with an 18 break, Johnathan replied with a 25 break, then Scott replied with a 35 break but went for a long difficult red thinking the frame was safe but in fact Johnathan could win by 2 clear points taking all the balls, and guess what he did.
4-0 to Johnathan (55-53)

Both players suffered a number of kicks throughout the match Scott seemed to get the kicks at more defining points, however Johnathan was the worthy winner.

Reports of this weeks semi-finals are shown below:

Monday saw the first Len Lee Invitation semi-final (best of 7) between Scott Raper (Northern) and Tommy Doherty (New Wortley Labour) at N.S.C. The opening two frames went to Scott who was quickly into his stride with useful contributions. The third frame became crucial for Tommy who made a well-constructed break of 46 to take a healthy lead. However, an in-off on the brown meant both players needing the remaining colours to win the frame. Tommy had the best chance to seal the frame on the black but subsequently went in-off again while attempting another safety shot. That knocked the wind out of Tommy’s sails and Scott duly completed the win with a concession from Tommy after a 36 break earlier in the fourth frame. Frame scores (Scott-Tommy): 61-13, 51(31)-27, 69-60(46), 66(36)-19.
REPORT BY PETER WALKER.

Tuesday saw the second semi-final between Johnathan Bagley (Harehills Labour) & Dave Baker (Main Line Social).
JB ran out what looks like an easy winner in the end by 4 frames to 1, but for much of the time it was no easy ride at all.
Dave Barker potted the last five colours in the first frame to take it on the black and surprise the Leeds Champion, before JB levelled at one all by taking the second after useful contributions from both players. Two fouls by Dave, one on a break of 30, swung the frame in the favour of JB.
The 3rd frame was really the decider, which JB took but only after Dave had opened up an early lead.
The 4th and 5th frames also went to JB, but only after Dave once again rallied in the final frame, before a difficult snooker sealed Dave's feat.
JB was not at his fluent best by his very high standards, but while Dave pushed him all the way, he could not lift his game just that other notch, otherwise a shock could have been on the cards.
FRAME SCORES (JB first) - 1.) 42-47, 2.) 64-30, 3.) 77-25, 4.) 80(48)-6, 5.) 64-21.

01 Jun 2014**SAM O'BRIEN - 2014 SYKES CUP CHAMPION**

Sam O'Brien (+15) of Harehills WMC claimed the coveted "George Sykes" Cup on Thursday 29th May defeating Craig Molnar (+13) of Crossgates WMC 3-0.
Neither player found any form really in a match littered with fouls, especially Craig who could not create any of the excitement which got him through his semi final the night but one before.
Dissapointed though he was, Craig had to concede defeat to Sam, who was far more confident and consistent with his smooth cue action on the night and run out an easy winner in the end!
Frame Scores (Sam O'Brien first) - 1.) 75-29, 2.) 85-45, 3.) 73-19

SEMI FINAL REPORTS BELOW:
PETER WALKER - Last Tuesday saw the first semi-final of the Sykes Cup (best of 5) between Craig Molnar (+13 from Crossgates WMC) and Darren Binns (+14 from Hunslet Carr) at the Northern. Craig won the cagey first frame and capitalised on a more fluent second frame to go 2 up. Darren battled back and managed to pot all the colours except the black to stay in the game. The fourth frame included numerous fouls and misses on the green ball after what looked like a commanding lead achieved by Darren. This gave Craig a chance to wrap the game up but Darren managed to fluke the black and take the game into a decider. The last frame was destined to be close with both players making useful contributions and came down to the last 3 colours with both players needing 2 of them to win. Darren potted the blue but missed the pink in the middle pocket for the match. However, Craig grasped the opportunity and potted pink and the final black to win 3-2 in the end. Good luck to Craig in the final and hard lines to the gallant loser Darren. Frame scores (Craig-Darren): 71-62 ; 83-56 ; 52-63 ; 61-67 ; 73-65.

REPORT BY TONY BURDEN: Sykes Cup semi-final – Wednesday 28th May 2014 – Luke Naylor-Haigh (Peggy Tub Social) v Sam O’Brien (Harehills WMC)
Though the result was a 3-0 win to Sam, this was a far closer match than the result suggests. The first frame swung both ways as far as the lead goes, until the point where the final 3 colours were left with Luke 23 in front and Sam requiring a snooker. He duly obliged and the degree of difficulty with the “snooker” resulted in a foul on the blue. Sam went on to clear the 3 remaining colours (2 visits), leaving a re-spotted black. After a few visits each, Sam potted the black and One Nil.
The next 2 frames were close, though Sam had the edge, once they were down to the colours. Whilst there were no breaks of note, the standard of play was high from these two talented young players.

21 May 2014** 2014 LEN LEE PAIRS WINNERS - Lewis GILLEN & Nick MORTIMER (New Wortley Labour)**

IT WAS BILLED AS A CRACKER & THAT'S HOW IT TURNED OUT!
The Final of this years Len Lee Pairs took place at the NSC on Thursday 22nd May, between J. Bagley / A. Conboy (Harehills Labour) & L. Gillen / N. Mortimer (New Wortley Labour), after both pairs secured 3-0 victories in their semi-final matches earlier in the week.
IN THE FINAL, LEWIS & NICK EVENTUALLY RAN OUT 3-2 WINNERS IN A MATCH THAT HAD EVERYTHING! - break building and sinlge pots making the centre table pockets look like 'buckets', classy safety play, easy misses by top players, tension, humour, a fight back and a tense final frame decider.
Receiving 34 points per frame, Lewis & Nick took the first 75-65, when Lewis cleared up from the yellow, after a very cagey start by both pairs, where 18 visits were made without a score, and after the Harehills pair took the lead.
A completely differant 2nd frame saw Lewis make a classy 55 break to take the frame 97-6 and secure a 2-0 lead for him and his partner.
THE THIRD FRAME WAS A CLASSIC!
Things didn't look good for the Harehills pair at the start of it who were looking at a 3-0 defeat, until firstly JB stepped up to the plate, with two contributions, the second an 18 ball 49 break before an easy miss for him, let Lewis & Nick back in it seemed.
However, after Lewis missed a simple pot red over the middle pocket, and then further easy pots were missed by both pairs, Andy C then produced a terrific 5 ball break which were all difficult pots especially the brown, allowing him & JB to take the 3rd frame 83-57.
The momentum now seemed to be swinging the other way, especially when JB and AC took the fourth frame as well 91-55 to set up the final frame decider.
After a poor break off in the final frame, JB pulled the start back more or less, but a missed red into the centre allowed Lewis & Nick to re-group.
A terrific snooker behind the black by Nick, gave Lewis the chance on his next visit, to make a contribution of 30 which ultimately sealed their victory.
LEWIS & NICK JUST GOT OVER THE LINE AFTER A GREAT FIGHT BACK BY JB & ANDY JUST FELL SHORT - GREAT MATCH!

15 May 2014**CONGRATULATIONS KRIS CHAPMAN - 2014 STAN BROOKE SINGLES CHAMPION**

Kris Chapman +19 hcp. (Crossgates Rec. Hall) is the 2014 Stan Brooke Singles Champion after beating Rob Johnson +34 hcp. (Bramley Villagers), by 249 points to 214 on Thursday night - 15th May.
To prove the value of scoring points in an aggregate format, Rob actually won 2 of the 3 frames but lost overall.
Kris started like a 'house on fire' and reeled the first frame off fairly easily 91-20 after a cagey start by both.
Rob then rallied in the second and the momentum started to swing back to him with a 'miss rule' situation, so much so, that if Rob had not gone in off the final pink, the points would have been more or less level with handicaps added going into the final 3rd frame.
As it turned out, Kris made 2 good pots on the final pink and black to take a 51 point lead into the final frame, even though Rob won the 2nd frame 76-56.
Even then, Rob was not going anywhere and he continued to make things difficult for Kris, and then when he put his best break of the night together he could still have taken the title.
However, his courageous fight came to an end when he missed the final brown, Kris then took it with a good pot and the blue and pink as well, and the rest is history as they say, even though Rob still won the 3rd frame - 61-45.
WELL DONE KRIS HARD LUCK ROB!

Semi- Final match reports below:
Monday 12th May Kris Chapman v Gareth Naylor report by Peter Walker.
Last Monday saw the first Stan Brooke singles semi-final held at the Northern Snooker Centre on the centre table. It was contested between Kris (a.k.a. Jack) Chapman (+19 based at Crossgates Rec) and Gareth Naylor (+39 from Peggy Tub). The opening frame saw Jack quickly into his stride which he dominated while Gareth was still getting used to the playing conditions. He won the initial frame and gained a very handy lead of 39 going into the second of three frames based on total aggregate. Although in the next frame Jack began with another early break, it was a much closer frame with Gareth battling back which included 8 foul and misses between them which seemed a little harsh. The conclusion of this frame resulted in Jack gaining 1 extra point to his existing lead. In the last frame, Jack slowly managed to overhaul Gareth’s 20 point handicap start and eventually took control, winning the last frame by a further 13 points with only pink and black remaining. Hard lines to Gareth and good luck to Jack in the final on Thursday. Frames scores were as follows, KC: 108(27)-GN: 69, 85-84, 85-72 (Total scores 278-225).

Tuesday 13th May - Rob Johnson v Mark Aspin - report by Andy Taffinder.
Frame 1 Rob Johnson to break
Both players found the no 1 board at NSC very difficult.
Rob Johnson edged it 69 - 56 taking a 13 point aggregate.

Frame 2 Mark Aspin to break
Once again both players found the table difficult.
Rob Johnson managed to get a 50 point lead up until the Brown.
Mark managed to clear the last balls with a 22 break reducing the aggregate
on frame 2 to 28.
Frame score 87 - 59 to Rob Johnson.

Frame 3 Rob Johnson to break
Mark went into the frame with a negative 41 aggregate plus the 17 start from
the handicaps totalling a massive 58 points in arrears.
This didn't phase Mark as he came back very strong and brought the
deficitate down to less than 20 points overall and if the balls had run a
'little kinder' for him, the end could have been very different.
However Rob strung a good 27 points in two visit's to the table which
finally put the game and match beond Mark.

Final frame score 74 - 73 to Mark.
