27 May 2018##Raper and Massey take Leeds Pairs Title##

A small field of 10 pairs battled it out today at the NSC for the privilege of being called "Leeds Pairs Champions".
The preliminary round saw Oliver Mulcahy have breaks of 57 and 44 as he and partner Danny Magee defeated father and son pairing Isa and Mohammed Ishtiaq 3-1. In the other preliminary tie, Tom Doherty and Ryan Walton beat LPSA duo Andy Dilucia and Darren Tate 3-1.
The quarter finals saw Doherty(58 break) and Walton defeat Mulcahy and Magee 3-1.
Scott Raper and Tony Massey beat Michael Gaughan and Richard Binns 3-1, Mark Ball (56 break) and Mick Jensen defeated Lewis Harper and Gavin Godfrey 3-0, and in a marathon close fought match, Chris Hart and Stephen Broadhead finally overcame Steve Parlour and Danny Dean 3-2.
The first semi-final turned out to be a fairly one sided affair, Scott Raper doing most of the damage as he and Tony Massey whitewashed Doherty and Walton 3-0.
The other semi was altogether closer as Hart and Broadhead ground out a 3-2 victory over Ball and Jensen by 3 frames to 2.
The final looked to be going the way of Raper and Massey as they forged into a 2-0 lead, winning the first frame on the black (66-52) and the second more comfortably (61-27).
Hart and Broadhead fought back in the next winning (76-33), and looked to be heading for 2-2 before a magnificent clearance from the last 2 reds by Scott Raper saw he and his partner clinch the match on the pink.

Many thanks to Ryan Walton for refereeing and to the NSC for use of their facilities.

25 May 2018**Bagley battles his way into the Leeds City Championship Singles Final**

An eagerly anticipated semi-final show down was set between the newly crowned Len Lee Invitation winner Ryan Walton and World Seniors No1 ranked player Jonathan Bagley.

The first frame didn’t quite live up to the billing as suggested with both players struggling to get a feel for the table and the balls. After a little flurry of pots between both players in this scrappy first it was Walton that put Bagley in a spot of bother on the colours and with foul and misses following Bagley conceded the frame on the colours
1 – 0
Second started much brighter and it was Bagley that struck first with a spell of little breaks to open up a 35 point advantage. Back came Ryan with 26 break of his own. Bagley then set a difficult snooker which left Walton missing on three occasions, eventually allowing Bagley to clear up to the black to level matters
1 – 1
Third frame, this time it was Walton to find a bit of form feeding off a couple of errors and miss pots from Bagley to fire a quick 15 break, followed by a 33 break to lead the match again.
2 – 1
Fourth and best frame saw Bagley fight back in style with a succession of pots including a 30 break, soon followed by a 40 clearance that quickly leveled the match.
2 – 2
The mini break helped Bagley as again he was in the ascendance in the fifth frame, Walton struggling to get into the frame. A 33 break from Bagley opened up an early lead and then with a succession of mini breaks of 14, 16 and 18 ensured Bagley took the frame and led for the first time in the match
2 – 3
The sixth frame was in the balance all way through, both players in the balls until position let them down. Walton then took control with some excellent single ball pots to open a 20 point lead with one red remaining. Bagley played a loose safety leaving the red near the green pocket, albeit not easy allowed Walton the chance to take advantage and level the match. It wasn’t to be as he hit the red aggressively and on NSC’s formidable centre table it just wasn’t to be and landing in the middle of the table with all the balls in a great position. Bagley needed up to the pink to claim his final spot. With nerves of steel Bagley completed this task with ease to win the frame and match
2 – 4
Well played to both players on the night. Thanks for Ken Symons for refereeing and of course NSC for their excellent facilities

23 May 2018**RYAN MAKES IT A DOUBLE IN THE INVITATION**

Last night Ryan Walton defeated Bob Patterson to retain the 2017/18 'Len Lee Invitation' title, after winning it for the first time last year.
Frame 1 - Both players were struggling with the table and this opening frame was a testament to this. It was very scrappy and with a high break of 14 not the opener the 20+ of supporters were hoping to see from these two top players. Ryan eventually won the frame on the pink with a 53 -27 score line.
Frame 2 - This frame started off in the same way with both players trying to get into the match, Bob was still struggling however Ryan was starting to find his way and with a break late in the frame of 37 took the frame 63 - 5 after Bob conceded with two reds left on the table.
Frame 3 - Ryan took a good early lead of 50 points after a well constructed break of 55, there were 3 reds left and the colours with blacks makes 51 points available. Bob took the last 3 reds with blacks, was the come back on? no he left himself a long yellow which he missed, he did battle on however and was still in the frame up until Ryan took the the brown and blue to take the frame 74 - 42.
Frame 4 - Once again Ryan took an early lead with a 50 break leaving Bob a mountain to climb. He did fight back to the colours however after leaving Ryan an easy Brown he conceded the frame and ultimately the match 61- 32.
Ryan took the match 4-0 so congratulations to him and Bob for making the Final.
The match was refereed to a high standard by Michael Davenport and scored by myself Andy Taffinder.
Thank you once again to the NSC for the use of 'centre table'

21 May 2018##Morley WMC take Stan Brooke Team title##

Tonight's match at the NSC saw Morley WMC A take on Harehills Labour A in the final of the Stan Brooke Team event.

First up for Morley was Lee Grimes (+33) against Adam Rennison (+20). Both players made light of the tight and lightning fast match table and in a potting fest which lasted barely 20 minutes, Lee emerged the winner by 91-42, the winning margin inflated by the fact that Lee potted the final few colours.
Next up for Morley was league secretary Paul Grimes (+24) against Paul Mawson (+17). This was an altogether different frame as both players struggled to come to grips with the table. A flurry of in offs by Grimes gave his opponent the upper hand and it was the Harehills cueist who ran out a narrow 62-55 winner, reducing the overall deficit to 42 points.
Next it was Morley,s Paul Sparkes (+12) up against Harehills captain Steve Parlour (+11). Steve is a regular attendee at LBSO staged events at the NSC and it showed as he quickly settled down and went about reducing the team deficit even further. In contrast his opponent never really settled and Parlour ran out a comfortable 90-42 winner, meaning Harehills started the last frame with a slender 6 point advantage.
The final frame saw league chairman Andy Taffinder (+4) pitted against another regular visitor to the NSC Danny Dean (-14).
Danny was first in with a small contribution but two scoring visits from Andy saw him pull away and with 1 red left he led by 34 points (28 overall). As the tension mounted Andy had a couple of opportunities to seal the match but couldn't quite deliver the killer blow. Danny battled back and he was 20 behind on the blue (14 overall) which meant he could win the match with the last 3 colours. He potted a long blue but agonisingly landed a couple of inches from the pink which meant he could only play a containing safety shot. Andy then played an excellent safety shot in return, partially snookering his opponent behind the black. Danny swerved round the black and hit the pink but left it over the middle bag. A relieved Andy stepped up and potted the pink to win frame and match for Morley (63-42).
The match was played in excellent spirit, thanks to referee Alex Crum for officiating and to the NSC for use of the match table.
