Leeds U16 Champion and U18 runner up 15 years old Lewis Harper made his third Leeds final last night when he defeated pre match favourite Scott Raper 4-2 at the Northern Snooker Centre.
A tentative first frame went to Harper 57-34, before an early 32 break from Raper allowed him to level the match with a 69-2 win.
A 24 break in the third put Harper 26 in front on green before Raper obtained the snooker he needed to set up a tense finish. Harper however held on to go 2-1 up (58-32).
A 28 break in the fourth extended Harper's lead to 3-1 (52-23) and a surprise win was on the cards.
Raper finally showed some form in the next and a 47 break gave him an easy 70-1 victory. At 3-2 down the comeback looked on. Harper however had other ideas and established a 25 point lead on the green in the sixth frame. Despite having several attempts at what would have been match ball he couldn't quite close out the frame and Raper eventually forced the frame to a 're-spotted black, had Harper blown his chance?
After several excellent safety shots from both players it was Raper who had first attempt at a long pot but it was well wide, up stepped young Lewis and he held his nerve, cutting a half ball black into the middle pocket for a memorable and well deserved victory.
Thanks to Michael Davenport for refereeing and to the NSC for use of the facilities.
Monday 18th March saw the Leeds Team final between Horsforth Cons and Gildersome Cons.
The first frame went to Horsforth as Scott Raper defeated Lewis Gillen with the aid of a 40 break.
Michael Gaughan then levelled for Gildersome with a win against Mark Ball. The third frame saw Gildersome take a 2-1 lead courtesy of a 53-19 victory for Dave Boyes over Mick Jenson.
Another 40 break for Scott Raper saw the scores levelled again at 2-2, and Horsforth went in front again at 3-2 thanks to a Mark Ball victory over Michael Gaughan, but Dave Boyes once again defeated Mick Jensen comfortably to level the match and take it into a deciding frame.
The two No 1 players squared off but this time it was Lewis Gillen's turn to knock in a 40 break and give his team the title 4-3.
Thanks to Michael Davenport for refereeing,to Andy Taffinder for marking and to the NSC for use of the match table.

In the Leeds U16 final Lewis Harper defeated Liam Pullen 2-1.
The first frame was nip and tuck and looked to be going the way of 15 years old Lewis as he led by 16 points with just 4 colours remaining. Up stepped Liam and the 13 years old showed his potential by calmly clearing the last 4 balls to take the frame 52-46 and lead 1-0. The second frame was again closely fought but this time Lewis held on, potting the pink to level the match 1-1.
With both players now settling into the match it seemed to be a matter of who got first clear chance in the decider and it was Lewis who got in amongst the balls and made a 42 break midway through the frame which effectively gave him the title 2-1.
In the U18 final Lewis continued his good form and with the aid of some great safety built a 2-1 lead against his older and more experienced opponent Joe Fenton who was looking to retain the title he won last year.
At 27 in front with one red remaining Lewis looked to be heading for a 3-1 victory. He rattled the red in the jaws of the top pocket and a little later rattled the brown using the rest before Joe stepped up and with the aid of a fantastic pot on the blue from tight on the baulk cushion he took the last 4 colours to level the match 2-2.
In the decider it was Joe who held his nerve and with the aid of a 56 break he took frame and match 3-2.
Both matches were keenly fought and played in great spirit.
Many thanks to the NSC for use of the facilities and to Michael Davenport for officiating.
