04 Mar 2018##Leeds U16 Competition##

Saturday 3rd March saw 23 players (22 boys and 1 girl), line up for this years Leeds U16 competition.
The 7 ties in the preliminary round saw last years finalist Daniel Boyes defeat Carter Lewis 2-0. Current Yorkshire U16 champion Joe Fenton eased past Ethan Barry 2-0,Charlie Mathews beat Ronan Lloyd Neilson 2-0,lone female entry Shannon Metcalf defeated last years semi-finalist Bailey Fisher 2-0, Casey Ratcliffe won 2-0 against Dylan Kemp, Yorkshire U16 beaten finalist Isa Ishtiaq had breaks of 48 and 42 in beating Oliver Hudson 2-0, and in the last prelimiinary round match 2017 Leeds U18 champion Lewis Harper eased past Oliver Burrows 2-0.

The last 16 went largely to form with wins for Joe Fenton against Daniel Boyes, Shannon Metcalf beat Charlie Mathews,Isa Ishtiaq included breaks of 48 and 37 in his win against Casey Ratcliff, Lewis Harper saw off Stanley Moody,Riley Fisher beat Ben Russell, current Leeds U16 champion Samuel Lee-Stevens started the defence of his title with a 45 break and a win against James Pears, Liam Pullen won a tight match against Josh Brady, and Jack Townsend defeated Michael Benson.

It was the quarter final stage when things got really interesting.
In the 1st quarter final Joe Fenton was up against Shannon Metcalf. Shannon won a tight first frame on the black before Joe came back with a 40 break to level the match. In the decider Shannon was in front going into the colours before Joe stepped up to clear yellow to pink, leaving himself a tricky black for the match. He missed and Shannon held her nerve to pot the black and ease into the semi-final.
The 2nd quarter final saw in form Isa Ishtiaq take on Lewis Harper. Isa won the first frame, but it looked like going 1-1 when Lewis had a 44 point lead in the second. Isa had other ideas though and a superb 58 clearance saw him take the match 2-0.
The 3rd quarter final saw perhaps the surprise of the round with 12 year old Riley Fisher beating last years winner Samuel Lee-Stevens 2-0, both frames decided on the black.
The last quarter final saw 12 year old Liam Pullen prove just too strong for Jack Townsend, running out a 2-1 winner to complete the semi-final line up.

The 1st semi-final saw the days in form player , 14 year old Isa Ishtiaq defeat 15 year old Shannon Metcalf 2-0. Shannon can be proud of her efforts throughout the day and she will surely have a great future ahead of her in the ladies game if she maintains her love of snooker.

In the 2nd semi-final Riley Fisher showed his quarter final performance was no fluke as he played good solid match snooker to defeat Liam Pullen 2-0, a 31 break in the second frame sealing the deal.

So Isa Ishtiaq takes on Riley Fisher in the final on a date to be confirmed. No doubt both players will be involved again when the U18 competition takes place later this month.

Well done to all the players concerned and thanks to the NSC for the use of the excellent facilities.
