Congratulations go to Beeston Hill Social, who last night became winners of the 2014 Stan Brooke Team Championship.
'What a difference a day makes' - or two in the case of losing finalists East Leeds SC.
On Tuesday they enjoyed a final 4th frame black ball victory in the semi-final against Crossgates Rec.
Last night they experienced exactly the opposite!
In a typically tense final where no player really excelled, and in a final frame which lasted over an hour with only 6 in the overall aggregate at the start of it, neither side took the initiative and on the final colours the lead went one way and then the other, so that on the final black, once again both sides could have won. Liam Nicholson of Beeston Hill held his nerve and potted the final pink and black to win the cup.
OVERALL SCORES - Beeston Hill 204 - East Leeds SC 192.
Individual scores (Beeston Hill first):
1) Leon Browne 60 - Naz Rouissi 40:
2) John Mullen 42 - Kris "Jack" Chapman 47:
3) Shaun Gordge 44 - Gregg Calter 53:
4) Liam Nicholson 58 - Gary Calter 52.
Dear All,
As you should be aware by now, Peter’s funeral service will be held this Friday – 4th April. It will take place at Pontefract Crematorium WF8 4HA starting at 10-40am. For those of you who wish to pay their last respects to Peter, who served this organisation so well for so many years, the Crematorium is on the Wakefield Road going out of Pontefract towards Featherstone. A wreath has already been organised by the LBSO, but I am informed by Peter’s wife Davina, that a collection plate in aid of the British Heart Foundation will be in place for the service. Hope to see as many of you there as possible. Bob
Local rivals East Leeds SC & Crossgates Rec Hall dished up a 4 frame thriller last night, not decided until the final black ball in the final frame.
East Leeds running out winners by 207 points to 204.
Chris Hudson (CG) and Naz Rouissi (EL) played out a close first frame with Chirs just running out the winner 48-46.
Captain Peter Walker (CG) then seemed to put the Rec in charge with a commanding frame victory against out of sorts Kris "Jack" Chapman 83-44.
Gregg Calter (EL) clawed some of the deficit back against Craig Hazelgrave by 64-38, in a topsy turvy frame which concluded with Gregg crucially taking the last 3 colours.
It was then left to Gary Calter (EL) and Jason Hudson (CG) to play out a thrilling final frame. 15 behind overall and giving a further 9 points on handicap at the start, Gary put his side in front half way through the frame only to see Jason rally and bring the scores level more or less again. The last red and a "brilliant" green and the first two colours by Jason took Crossgates back in the lead only for Gary to pot the brown and blue to put East Leeds back in front by 2 overall. Jason then potted a solid pink to put Crossgates 4 back in front but couldnt get on the black.
Both players then played a few safety shots before Jason had a second difficult attempt on the black which missed and rolled towards the middle pocket.
Gary was left with no way a gimme but the rest is history as they say.
IN A VERY SPORTING MATCH UNLUCKY CROGGY & WELL DONE EAST LEEDS!
EAST LEEDS NOW PLAY BEESTON HILL SOCIAL IN THE FINAL TOMORROW - THURSDAY 3rd APRIL AT THE NSC - GOOD LUCK TO BOTH SIDES!
The first semi final of the Stan Brooke team was won by Beeston Hill Social on Monday night who defeated Harehills Labour club on aggregate by 335 to 277.
Austin Butterworth- Harehills and Leon browne put on a good opening display with Austin recovering his 29 point handicap and taking the first frame by 5 points. The second frame between John Mullen- Beeston and Andy Conboy saw Andy recover most of his handicap deficit of 38 to lose by 11 to John through good potting and safety play on the difficult centre table at the Northern S C.
Third on was Shaun Gordge playing Chris Ibbitson- Harehills who was also conceding a 38 point start. Both players potted good indiviual balls but failed to add much in the line of colours with the best chance going to Chris who missed a medium range black which could have turned the frame Chris's way, which gave Shaun the chance to put some good potting and safety play together to give him the frame.
Last on was Liam Nicholson- Beeston against Jonathaan Bagley who took a 52 point aggregate score plus a handicap difference of 68 into the final frame made it an almost impossible task for Bagley. Jonathan made an excellent start with a 41 break only to run out of position behind the pack after potting a red. With the gap narrowing Liam held his nerve and played a good safety game with a couple of important blacks potted to put the match beyond Jonathans reach.
Well done to Beeston who await the result of the second semi final to be played tonight with the final on Thursday 3rd of April.
Draws for the last 8 of both of the above competitions are now showing on the "competitions" tab.
Given the Easter holidays and no more dates available to book in April, the CLOSING DATE FOR BOTH COMPETITIONS IS SUNDAY 27th APRIL.
There will be NO extensions after this date however!
Dear Snooker & Billiards colleagues:
For those who are not already aware, it is with the deepest regret that I have to inform you that Peter Hawkyard passed away sometime last Saturday after spending several weeks in Pinderfields Hospital.
Apologies for the delay in posting this message, but I was only made aware last night after a week end away, and the decision was taken to hold off any announcement to respect Peter's family in mourning and until more facts could be established.
However, after being informed that messages have already been posted on Facebook, we thought it appropriate to send this message now, from the Organisation Peter served so very well over the years.
Peter's funeral will take place on Friday 4th April at Pontefract Crematorium starting at 10-40am.
I shall post further news if and when we receive it and I shall also put together and circulate a full tribute on behalf of the LBSO in time for the funeral.
I am sure you will all agree, Peter will be missed in many respects and all our sympathies are with his family at present times.
