17 May 2018##Walton reaches Len Lee Invitation final##

Ryan Walton defeated Daniel Hughes 4-0 to go one step closer to retaining the Len Lee Invitation title he won last year.
Walton settled the quicker of the two winning the first frame 69-1 with breaks of 20 and 34.
The second frame was close, Walton eventually potting the pink for a 56-42 victory. A 48 break then made it 3-0.
Hughes looked on course to pull one back when he established a 30 point lead in the fourth, but a 44 break from Walton put him back in front and he eventually potted the pink to finish the match.
He now plays Bob Patterson in next Tuesday's final.

Thanks to Alex Crum for refereeing and the NSC for use of the match table.

16 May 2018**Veteran Patterson secures final spot….**

Bob Patterson of Crossgates Recreation overcame a resilient Sean Stevens of New Wortley to secure his place in the final of the Len Lee Invitation.

The first frame inevitably started scrappy as both players tried to adjust to the formidable ‘Centre Table’ at NSC with the pockets and speed! A couple of early pots for both players eased nerves but it Stevens who took the early initiative at the back end of the frame with a flurry of little breaks, taking the remaining colours to edge the first frame
0 – 1
Second frame again never really got going, both players never really in control of the cue ball which often led to positional play going astray. It was Patterson though that muscled through to take a low scoring second frame
1 – 1
Third frame saw both players more relaxed and it was Patterson in first compiling a 24 break before losing position. In stepped Stevens to make a claim on this match adding a very good 39 break himself to the scoreboard. A couple of nasty snookers allowed Stevens the advantage and taking the Yellow, Green and Brown put the third frame to bed.
1 – 2
Fourth frame started somewhat strange with a flurry of ‘Foul n Miss’ snooker from Patterson giving Stevens the early lead. But it was Patterson who then showed his class with a superb 41 break followed with some more excellent potting to level the match.
2 – 2
Fifth frame was by far the best in terms of quality. Again a slow start, but then Patterson was in the balls first compiling an excellent 32 break, quickly followed by a 33 break to lead the match.
3 – 2
The sixth and ultimately the final frame went again to the way of Patterson. Finding his form now the Veteran rolled back the years getting in the balls early doors then putting together another excellent break of 41 to put him in command. A good snooker from Stevens resulting in a miss and leaving a free ball meant Stevens could have a chance to get back into the frame. It wasn’t to be as again struggled to control the cue ball on this difficult table. Bob stepped up and put the frame to bed adding another 14 to his total to win the match and claim his final place
4 – 2
Well played to both players. Thanks to Ken Symons for refereeing and NSC for their excellent playing facilities.

14 May 2018##Hirst/Fell cruise through to Stan Brooke Pairs final ##

Steven Hirst and Scott Fell defeated Tony Massey and Daz Hughes to reach the Stan Brooke Pairs final. The damage was done in the first frame as receiving 24 start they won 108-32,enjoying the best of the running in the process. They backed this up with an 87-50 victory in the second frame. This gave them a massive 113 point advantage going into the third and final frame. Das Hughes potted the first two reds in the final frame but could only manage a yellow with each, which meant they were effectively 131 behind with a possible 131 points on the table! Massey crafted a 39 break but it was too little too late as the Belle Isle pair eased their way to the win.
Thanks to referee Peter Walker and the NSC for use of the match table.

Tomorrow and Thursday see the Len Lee Invitation semi-finals take centre stage.

13 May 2018**Leeds Team Championship Winners - Denison Hall**

Denison Hall claimed the Leeds Team Championship after winning a dramatic deciding frame black ball….

The first frame of the night saw Dave Barker from Main Line up against Ryan Walton from Denison Hall. Dave started the brighter potting well early doors with successive mini breaks which opened up a 20 point cushion going onto the colours. Ryan produced some great pots which included the shot of the night blue with rest smashed up the rail and screwed back perfectly to land on the pink to the middle to secure the first point of the night.
0 – 1
The second frame was Lee Atkinson and Tommy Doherty, again it was Main Lines Atkinson in the driving seat with some consistent potting with breaks of 16, 17 and 18 in quick succession. But Tommy fought back with an excellent 33 break to take it down to the last 3 colours. It was Lee that potted a great blue and even better pink to level the tie
1 – 1
Third frame between Martin McGuigan and Gerry Walton was a tighter affair; both players find some early rhythm with some excellent potting a very fast table. A series of foul n miss snookers led to Main Lines Martin needing the last 3 remaining balls to take it on the black, to which he truly stepped up and cleared to lead the tie
2 – 1
The fourth between Dave and Ryan never looked anything else than a Ryan win, he started the frame on top form firing a 23 break followed quickly by a 35 break to tie the match
2 – 2
The next was an opposite of the previous frame, this time it was Lee on the front foot against an out of sorts Doherty. Lee had a big lead but Tommy tried to get the three snookers he needed going onto the colours. He superbly got the snookers and had to win the frame before fouling on the blue to hand Lee the deserved win
3 – 2
The fifth frame meant Gerry had to win to force a final frame decider. It was evident the tension was starting to mount for both players and Gerry started well with an 18 break, before a quick reply from Martin had the game on a knife edge… Gerry then had a series of good pots to edge clear to make the frame beyond reach and force the decider
3 – 3
The decider was then set and Lee Atkinson chose to play against the on form Ryan Walton in the winner takes all final frame. Ryan started well and quickly opened up a 20 point advantage, but Lee had other ideas and was on a 41 break with red remaining and had an horrendous kick when attempting to pot the pink to the middle. In stepped Ryan potting a great red without landing on a colour so was forced to play safe. The game went down to the colours and again it was Walton that potted from yellow to pink to force the tie and match going down to a black ball. A couple of safety shots a piece led to Walton having pot full length black to win the match, never in doubt as the black hit the back of the pocket to give Denison Hall a 4 – 3 win

Well played to both teams, thanks to NSC for providing superb playing facilities and of course to Alex Crum for refereeing.

10 May 2018**2017-18 - 3 MAN KO WINNERS - BELLE ISLE WMC 'D'**

Last night at Farsley Cons, BELLE ISLE WMC 'D' won the Leeds & District / LBSO's oldest team competition, by beating MIDDLETON CONS 'C' 4 frames to 2.
BELLE ISLE first - "Captain Joe' (Crossthwaite) was the difference on the night, defeating Darren Binns 2-0 in two very close frames.
Earlier Graham Bluff (+40) and Steve Reynolds (+26), shared their two frames which they would both probably want to forget - (106-107 & 91-51).
Paul Whitaker (+23) also drew 1-1 with Tony Hunt (+26) - (99-63 & 52-84).
So it was left to Joe (-2) and Darren (+12) to decide the final, with 2 very close frames of good quality which could have gone either way.
Darren started the better in the 1st frame, until Joe came from nowhere really to snatch it with a good long final pot black - 61-56.
The 2nd frame saw Joe start the better this time, until a change in tactics from him, allowed Darren to rally with a good comeback break.
However, a fantastic pot from brown to blue was itself worthy of winning the match, which Joe eventually did on the pink, winning the frame - 68-56 - and with it the cup.
CONGRATULATIONS BELLE ISLE.
Thanks to Farsley Cons for staging the match and preparing 2 good tables.
Thanks also to Alex Crum & Bob Patterson for refereeing.

09 May 2018##Congratulations to Isa Ishtiaq and Joe Fenton ##

Last night saw the finals of the Leeds U16 and U18 competitions.

First up were 15 year old Isa Ishtiaq and 12 year old Riley Fisher battling it out for the U16 title.
It was a nervy start for both players but Riley settled first and led for the majority of the first frame before Isa came back and pinched it on the pink. That seemed to give Isa confidence and an excellent 46 break in the second frame helped him secure the title 2-0 (49-40, 73-20).

Isa was then in action again in the U18 final, this time against current U16 Yorkshire champion Joe Fenton. Isa took the first frame comfortably and looked to be heading for a "double" triumph, but Joe had other ideas and started to show why he is one of the areas brightest prospects. Breaks of 36 and 32 saw Joe take a 2-1 lead and he wrapped the match up in the next to secure his first Leeds U18 title. Frame scores, (Joe first) were 29-62,59-41,68-9,60-34.

Liam Pullen won the junior high break prize with a magnificent 74 break in the qualifying rounds.

Presentations will take place after the Leeds Singles final on Friday 22nd June at the NSC.

Thanks to referee Mick Davenport and the NSC for use of the excellent facilities.

Next up on Thursday, Denison Hall take on Main Line in the final of the Leeds Team Championship.
